When you think of historic franchises in the NHL, the original six immediately come to mind: The Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Detroit Redwings set the standard for rabid fan bases and hockey history. That said, twenty five years before the NHL was founded with these six iconic teams, the Seattle Metropolitans became the first American team to win the Stanley Cup.
When the National Hockey League awarded its 32nd franchise to Seattle on December 4th 2018, there was reason to celebrate in the Pacific Northwest. Outsiders might have questioned whether Seattle could support another major league franchise, especially one in a sport that few play in the region. However, on March 1st 2018 those concerns were silenced by 25,000 season ticket holder deposits within 75 minutes. Since then, the franchise has nearly sold out of their premium suites and metropolitan club seats, proving Puget Sound corporate entities were willing to put their marketing dollars in play on the NHL. Add to the intrigue the amazing fact that the Seattle Metropolitans, were the first American team to win the prestigious Stanley Cup in 1917 and you have a hockey town ready to embrace their team. Season ticket allocations started in the Spring of 2020 and the puck dropped once again in the Fall of 2021.
